Selden Daniels

Its been a tough week for us but I feel bad complaining, because it has been even worse for others.
Sunday, September 9th, Donna Daniels called Matt to inform us that Selden was back in the hospital and that his Cancer was getting really bad. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer about 2 years ago, but the hormone therapy that he was using seemed to be working. However, Labor day weekend Selden's condition took a turn for the worse and he was admitted to Stevens hospital for treatment.

So first thing Sunday morning we headed into Stevens hospital to see Selden. He was very thin and pale, but seemed to be in good spirits. He spoke with Matt a little, but he had a hard time because he was so tired. We stayed with him and Donna (his wife) for about an hour and she informed us that they were waiting to see what the doctor said on Monday.

Monday we waited for news. Without wanting to bother the family we didn't call them. But later that night, Jeff Daniels (Selden's son) called us and said that Selden wasn't doing good, and that he was requesting that Matt come quick. After driving to Stevens to find out that Selden had been released earlier in the day and was home we arrived at the Daniels place. We were told that the doctor told Selden that he could try chemotherapy, but that it was going to be really hard for him in his weakened state. Selden decided not to try the treatment.
At home he was seated in a room with O2 trying to stay comfortable. Without speaking, he pointed for Matt and I to look in the corner of the room. There he had hung the lei that he wore when he spoke at our ring ceremony. It was very touching. Matt took Selden's hand and kissed him, and told Selden that he loved him, and Selden yelled back, "I love YOU" and we left the room so that he could rest.
Selden passed away on September 11th, 2007 surrounded by his family. He held on to see his youngest daughter Christine, and was able to speak with his son Kurt who is serving his mission in Japan. The Daniels asked that I put together a slide show of Selden for the funeral, and I was honored to do so. It turned out great, and the family seemed to love it.

Matt was asked to give the opening prayer, and he did a great job. I was so proud of him. He kept it together good for his good friend Selden.

I want to post the obituary, because I think that it is a really great tribute to Selden and the amazing person that he was.

Internment will be held at Redwood Memorial Estates in West Jordan, UT.
Selden will be dearly missed by many, and there was proof of that at his funeral. Selden was a great friend, father figure and crabbing buddy to Matt, and I know that Matt will never forget him. We are so thankful to have known him, and I am so thankful that we were able to be with him during the last moments of his influential life. We are thankful for the Atonement, and for the promise that we will be able to see Selden again, and again laugh at his jokes and enjoy his personality.
